Liberty is a documentary film that follows the journey of painter Gretchen Ryan, who has spent the past six years working on a large format oil painting, Liberty Leading the Animals.

The painting, inspired by Eugène Delacroix’s Liberty Leading the People, portrays a fantastical and dramatic scene of approximately 160 animals running or flying free, unified around a central female figure embodying the virtue of liberty.

Each animal character portrays animals who are currently being widely used commercially in the areas of food production, clothing, science, or entertainment in ways that cause extreme suffering. This 13-foot-wide, 7-foot-tall masterpiece was unveiled at a special event in Los Angeles in May 2025.
